Gammy's Desk

Copy of Untitled.jpg

In the spirit of pride and all things queer and dear, my desk has been covered in glitter. I’m a huge proponent of that gay shit on the regular, but I’ve been having to show out especially harder for my community finally gaining some enjoyment again as the world opens up. We’re all keen on how a virus can shake up the queer community in a variety of ways - some damage lasting generations. The COVID-19 pandemic has been another high hurdle, but the chance of togetherness and the re-acceptance of intimacy is keeping us all sane.

In my way to say “I love you” to all of us. I’m highlighting some queer art, in a variety of mediums that show the range of our expression. Hope you all enjoy.

VENENO LA SERIE on HBO Max

I am rewatching this, again, simply for the jokes. Detailing the life of Cristina “La Veneno” Rodriguez, a pioneer trans icon of Spain, and her challenging rise to fame, I watch this show enamoured by the storytelling. I also suggest watching in Spanish (get the subtitles if you need to) to save the greater chunk of the humor. It’s really nice to experience such similar jokes in a culture an ocean away from mine. There’s that validation in belonging to a community that is the same anywhere you go.

Jericho Brown’s “The Tradition”

There is much to say about the experiences of being gay, black, masculine - and open to love. While this isn’t a collection of love poems, I must say every page opened a specific part of my heart wider and wider. Brown writes with particular emotional vigor, the type that leaves you with a hand on your chest. Plus - it does not hurt that he is mighty fine to look at.

Karmen Gei

Karmen Gei is a film by Senegalese director Joseph Gaï Ramaka. It is a retelling of the Carmen myth taking place in a prison in Dakar. Karmen, an eccentric prisoner, performs a dance so erotic she is able to seduce her female prison guard to allow her to escape. When I first watched this film, it was some of the only queer African representations I’ve ever witnessed. Revisiting it now I see it amongst a greater, more diverse black canon.

Bernice Bing

Bernice Bing is a Chinese- American lesbian painter who was known for her involvement with the San Francisco Bay Area art scene of the 60s. I’ve been feeling the urge to pick up paints and large canvasses and diving into the world of abstract paints. One thing about me though, I don’t act on anything unless I do my research, and Bernice has been a new inspiration. Her art style consists of blending calligraphy and abstract expressionism, a notable mixture of two of my favorite things.
