The System by Newm Nera
In his latest offering, ‘The System,’ NewmNera pens an open letter to the President. The music video directed by Lundin Scene is a retro visual with a timeless theme: the systematic oppression of black people in America. The Boston rapper cruises through the city in an old Sedan showing us what racism looks like, both past and present. The reddish-brown color grading along with old video clips and newspaper articles give off an older VHS feel. The relaxing and melodic mariachi guitar riff juxtaposes the harsh reality that NewmNera portrays in his lyrics. He speaks on the modernization of oppression through debt, gentrification and the shortcomings of the education system. A laid-back conga provides the rhythm while we’re hit with the imagery of burning crosses and rapid gunfire. NewmNera’s clever wordplay seamlessly blends with the vibe of the music as he sports a spoken word-like flow, claiming “on my head a hidden price tag like a gift receipt." The artist's attempt to remind listeners about the results of a crooked institution is bold and fearless as demonstrated through the chorus in which he explicitly denounces "the system." NewmNera definitely doesn’t sugar coat his words on this track. What we’re given is a raw prompt packaged into a song that lures you in with its leisurely nature only to grab you by the collar.
