Editor's Letter January

First things first, we here at Brainwash want to thank you for reading + engaging with us and obviously being a cool kid. We love you for that!

January is all about VISION here at Brainwash.

There’s this amazing scene in Hustle and Flow where Djay (played by Terrence Howard), a drug dealer/pimp, knocks on the door of former schoolmate and music producer Key (played by Anthony Anderson). Sex workers in tow, Djay tells Key that he wants his help to produce a rap record. Key questions his work ethic and ability to follow an idea all the way through. “There are two types of people: those that talk the talk and those that walk the walk,” Key says. “People who walk the walk sometimes talk the talk but most times they don't talk at all, 'cause they walkin'. Now, people who talk the talk, when it comes time for them to walk the walk, you know what they do? They talk people like me into walkin' for them." Still, Key listens to Djay's record that he recorded on a bootleg kid’s keyboard bought off of a crack addict a few days prior. Despite his little monologue, he is totally on board. He’s ready to walk for him. He has VISION.

VISION is the ability to see what is and what can be. What happens when regular folks look beyond what is directly in front of them with hopes of creating something bigger than themselves? All it takes is one person to see that Youtube clip of you singing in your bedroom and suddenly you’re Justin Bieber. Or maybe your mom is watching tv one day and encourages you to try out for Project Runway and you become the next Christian Siriano. I’m totally fascinated by those who have so much foresight that they can literally predict the future.  As we dive head first into 2017,  this month is all about turning the idea ofVISION turning it inside out for analysis.

So, what does VISION mean to y’all? You have 31 days to figure it out. We want to hear from you! Here are some ideas to get you started.

Some ideas to think about:

Visionaries: Modern Day Visionaries

Stories of starting a business/brand

Psychics/Aura Readers/ Energy Workers

Fashion forecasting: predicting the next big fashion trends

Who’s up next: a roundup list of musicians/designer/creatives who have flown under the radar

Spirituality + God
